ITS Ireland is delighted to announce an upcoming course in wireless communications designed specifically for ITS professionals. Intelligent Transportation Systems are increasingly being supported by radio technologies. From Bluetooth journey times to tolling operations, to the promise of 5G capability for connected vehicles, wireless communications are playing a key role in delivering transport solutions for Smart Cities. This training course gives an introduction to the fundamentals of radio engineering, explains popular wireless technologies, and also gives an over of networking fundamentals and the technologies behind the Internet of Things.
Who should attend
This course is suitable for anyone who is involved in the design, operation or maintenance of ITS systems using wireless communications. The course is also appropriate for anyone who, whilst not involved directly in such ITS systems, is required to authorise or assess solutions submitted by others.
No prior knowledge or experience of radio technology is required.
The course will be presented by lecturers at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at IT Tallaght. Delivering academic programmes and research for both hardware and system software technology in academic disciplines related to electronic design, communications and information transmission, electric power and energy systems and, areas which occupy important positions in society’s infrastructure, the Department also conducts research in fields that include radio frequency systems, high speed digital electronics for data compression, embedded computer systems, optical switches and measurement systems and energy management. On campus, in ITT they have several advanced laboratories which are unique in the sector such as the Computer Networking laboratory, the Radio Frequency Laboratory, and the Centre for Microelectronic Fabrication.
The main aim of the course is to introduce wireless fundamentals and terminology to ITS professionals through presentations and practical demonstrations. The content is presented over two days. The fundamental material is presented during the mornings and practical demonstrations are integrated into afternoon sessions. The following topics will be covered:
- Wireless Communication Overview
- Core Concepts
- Wireless Technologies
- Networking Fundamentals
- Radio Engineering
- Internet of Things
- Intelligent Transport Systems
On successful completion of this course a participant will be able to:
- Explain the importance of bandwidth, frequency allocations and transmitter power
- List current short range wireless technologies
- Use appropriate abbreviations
- Show awareness of propagation issues and the basic processes in a wireless communications system
- Understand the role of wireless transmission in Internet of Things (IoT) and ITS systems.
- Demonstrate awareness of relevant regulatory standards.
