On Wednesday 24th June, ITS Ireland was delighted to receive a delegation from Hangzhou city, the capital and largest city of Zhejiang province in eastern China. The delegation team were members of the Hangzhou Communications Investment Group and the Hangzhou Changyun Transport Group and were visiting Ireland to learn more about the intelligent transport systems in use in Dublin and also what Big Data and Cloud Computing techniques are being employed. Following an early morning tour of the Dublin City Council traffic Control room, a number of presentations were given as follows:
Barry McCann (Intelligent Transportation Systems, Dublin City Council) gave an introduction on the traffic signals systems used in Dublin and also an overview of recent transport projects in the city, such as the Dublin Bikes rental scheme, and the Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) system.
Hugh O’Neill (INSIGHT Centre for Data Analytics, UCD) gave an introduction to the work being carried out at UCD under the INSIGHT research programme. In particular, the application of data analytics techniques such as Machine Learning and Recommender Systems were explored with a view to their potential in Urban Mobility.
Jia Yuan Yu (IBM Smarter Cities) presented the results of Big Data research being carried out under Horizon 2020 and using Dublin city as a test environment. The project, Intelligent Synthesis and Real Time Response using Massive Streaming of Heterogeneous Data (INSIGHT), looks at the potential of using social media channels to improve the ability of existing systems to identify and cope with emergencies in a transportation setting.
The meeting was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and ITS Ireland would like to extend their thanks and best wishes to all the delegation team members. In addition, thanks go to all the presenters on the day and to Dublin City Council for the tour and the use of conference facilities.
