EETS Stakeholders Conference

ITS Ireland was represented at the EETS Stakeholders Conference hosted by the European Commission directorate-general for mobility and transport (DG-MOVE) in Brussels on the 11th February 2011.

The European Commission decision 2009/750/EC on the definition of the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) its technical elements and their directive 2004/52/EC on the interoperability of electronic toll road systems within the European community entered into force in October 2009. Under this directive, EETS is to be made available for all vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes and/or allowed to carry more than nine passengers by 2012 and is to be available for all other types of vehicle by October 2014.

DG-MOVE is compelled to prepare a mid-term review on the state of advancement of EETS deployment and the conference formed part of this review process. The purpose of the conference was to present the results of an EETS stakeholder’s survey commissioned by DG-MOVE to analyse the progress made by member states in implementing the EU EETS directive and also to discuss any issues/challenges that member states face in meeting their obligations to implement EETS within the mandated timeframe.

DG-MOVE is currently completing a detailed analysis of the survey results and will incorporate this alongside inputs received from stakeholders during the conference into their final mid-term report on EETS progress. This report is expected to be completed within the next month.
