The ITS Ireland Research Bursary was established to promote research and development in the area of Intelligent Transportation Systems in Ireland. The aim of the bursary is to deliver funding for ITS research projects through collaborative partnerships with our members. Following on from the initial project carried out by IT Tallaght, funded by ARUP trust, ITS Ireland is now delighted to announce the commencement of a new research project in collaboration with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
The bursary will fund a one-year postdoctoral research project to address the predicted impact of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) on the Irish national road network. The objectives are to understand how CAVs will affect road transport in Ireland and to identify what needs to be done now in order to maximise the opportunities that CAVs will bring. The focus of the research will be divided into three strands: the first two will be examinations of the anticipated impact of CAVs on road safety and traffic management; the third strand will be an assessment of policies and structures that would need to be put in place in order to optimally manage the introduction of CAVs.
